Wolf Gang Black River Review
Wolf Gang got a boost from touring or playing openings for big name bands such as Coldplay and Keane. Keane even posted Wolf Gang’s latest single Black River on their own site, which is very nice and which should get the band thousands of new ears to listen to the title track of their new EP.
First, Wolf Gang is neither Keane nor Coldplay. There are reasons why these bands have become so huge. Their latest output may be weak (hopefully this can be reversed) but they had and still have what is takes to deliver awesome music. And what is that? Great lead vocals. Chris Martin and Tom Chaplin are really up there. Then great songs. Melodies, hooks, production. Last but not least: great musicians and with it memorable live performances. Wolf Gang’s Black River is not a bad song. Putting it on Keane’s home page may be cruel: it does not measure up with the best of Keane on any of the above points of greatness. Vocals are OK. Verse is passage. Chorus is what sticks and the use of the brassy sound is pretty cool. But what is the song about? Does it move any string at all? Hard to say. The video is rather poor… Score out of 10? 5/10. The remix on the EP is a good idea… Wolf Gang makes music that is listenable to for sure. But there’s a couple of steps on that ladder to get to the heights of the great bands they have opened for.
